Propagating Cyperus alternifolius

Umbrella head in water · MerlinYes plant guide

Before you start

Use a healthy umbrella head with a short length of stem attached. Trim damaged bracts with clean scissors.

Gather a labelled pot with drainage, clean scissors and fresh propagation mix. Unwrap the cutting on arrival and check that the stem is firm and sound.

Plant-specific notes

Trim the umbrella bracts if needed to fit a clean jar. Invert the head so its centre touches clean water. Wait for shoots and roots before potting into moist mix.

Setting up the cutting

Place the umbrella head upside down in a clean shallow jar of water in bright indirect light. Keep the centre in contact with water and refresh it when cloudy. Keep the jar warm and out of direct sun.

When to pot on

Wait until new shoots and several roots develop. Pot the new plant into moisture-retentive mix and keep it consistently moist while it establishes.

If something goes wrong

Wilting can come from excess heat, dehydration or a rotting base. Move into diffuse light, check the stem and adjust humidity or drainage before adding water. Discard mouldy or collapsed material.
