The illustration shows the principle of aligning living tissue and securing a graft union. Look for a healed union and sustained growth. Follow the plant-specific method and obtain trained help for grafting or budding. General method illustration; the plant-specific notes below take priority.

Before you start

Check whether the stems are dormant, healthy and have viable buds. Confirm cultivar identity and rootstock compatibility before cutting or planting.

Gather clean grafting tools, labels, suitable rootstock and grafting tape. Keep the scion cool and protected from drying until use.

Plant-specific notes

Ice peach, flat peach and other peach cultivars are normally budded or grafted onto compatible rootstocks. Confirm that the supplied wood is viable scion material.

Making the graft

Ask a propagation nursery to match suitable rootstock and timing. When bench grafting is appropriate, align the living cambium on at least one side, secure the union and prevent the scion from drying. Use clean tools and trained help for knife work.

When to pot on

Watch for a firm healed union and sustained scion growth. Remove shoots arising below the union once the graft has taken. Pot or plant according to rootstock requirements.

If something goes wrong

A shrivelled scion or blackened union suggests failure. Check the fit, timing and rootstock compatibility before trying again.

Related shop listings

View cutting 1 · View cutting 2 · View cutting 3

Further reading

University of Georgia Extension fruit propagation

← Propagation Handbook Grafting or budding · MerlinYes plant guide Method at a glance Before you start Check whether the […]

["post-1515","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
