Propagating Capparis spinosa

Advanced rooting trial · MerlinYes plant guide

Before you start

Use the youngest firm, healthy material available. Keep each cutting separate and label it. With mature or dormant shipped stems, a leafy-tip method may be unsuitable.

Gather a labelled pot with drainage, clean scissors and fresh propagation mix. Unwrap the cutting on arrival and check that the stem is firm and sound.

Plant-specific notes

Trial firm young cuttings in a warm, gritty mix. Avoid waterlogging the base. Rooting is variable and seed is an alternative for species plants.

Setting up the cutting

Try one or two sound leafy tips in an airy, damp medium under filtered light and ventilated humidity. Keep the base aerated and remove failed cuttings promptly. If material is valuable or scarce, consult a propagation nursery first.

When to pot on

Expect variable results. Keep a record of cutting maturity and conditions. Confirm roots before potting, and use the alternative below if rooting proves unreliable.

If something goes wrong

Wilting can come from excess heat, dehydration or a rotting base. Move into diffuse light, check the stem and adjust humidity or drainage before adding water. Discard mouldy or collapsed material.
