Grafting or budding · MerlinYes plant guide
Before you start
Check whether the stems are dormant, healthy and have viable buds. Confirm cultivar identity and rootstock compatibility before cutting or planting.
Gather clean grafting tools, labels, suitable rootstock and grafting tape. Keep the scion cool and protected from drying until use.
Plant-specific notes
Persimmon cultivars are usually grafted. Use healthy dormant scionwood on a compatible rootstock and do not assume visible bud growth proves union.
Making the graft
Ask a propagation nursery to match suitable rootstock and timing. When bench grafting is appropriate, align the living cambium on at least one side, secure the union and prevent the scion from drying. Use clean tools and trained help for knife work.
When to pot on
Watch for a firm healed union and sustained scion growth. Remove shoots arising below the union once the graft has taken. Pot or plant according to rootstock requirements.
If something goes wrong
A shrivelled scion or blackened union suggests failure. Check the fit, timing and rootstock compatibility before trying again.
